The major mechanical properties and behaviors of FRP versus steel reinforcing need to be grasped prior undertaking any designing project. FRP cooling towers manufacturers will talk about fiber reinforced polymers including composites with aramid, basalt, carbon, and glass.
FRP systems are widely used and installed in place of steel reinforcement for reinforced concrete structures including cast-in-place and post and pre-tensioned bridges, columns, precast concrete pipes, beams, and other components.
The advantages offered by FRP material are more in number as compared to steel reinforcements, such as-
- Corrosion resistance
- Weather resistance
- Temperature resistance
- Chemical and solutions resistance
- Water resistance
- Rust proof
FRP materials are used as original reinforcement and for strengthening distinct structures by structural engineers in the private and public industries.
Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP)
FRP is used with glass fibers as it is among predominant reinforcing fiber in entire FRP range. E glass is widely accepted fiber by engineers. It has electrical insulating properties, great heat resistance, and has the lowest cost. Then there are S glass fibers, which have higher heat resistance and about 1/3rd higher tensile strength when compared to E glass.
Basalt FRP
Basalt fibers have higher tensile strength as compared to E glass fibers. However, their tensile strength is not more than S glass fibers and cost similar to the E glass fibers. Basalt FRP has better resistance than E glass and S glass fibers to the alkalis in concrete.
Aramid FRPs
Aramid fibers have high strength and 40% lower density as compared to glass fibers. Aramid is a high elastic modulus fiber that costs higher than basalt and glass fibers. Due to expensiveness, aramid fibers are least used fibers for structural applications. Moreover, aramid fibers have tendency to absorb moisture, so there is a need of careful storage and planning of a project using this fiber.
Carbon FRPs
Carbon fibers are good at tensile strength and elastic modulus. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer using high and ultra-high modulus carbon fibers are most preferable materials in the aerospace sector. It is because of its strength to weight ratio that is among the highest of all the FRPs.
