Cooling towers serve an extremely important role in the industries by bringing down the temperature of the involved liquid. In some of the previous blogs, we talked about the types of cooling towers, the features of FRP cooling towers, etc. This blog is dedicated to make you understand what all parts come together to form an FRP cooling tower.
The components of a cooling tower can be broadly classified into structural components which include the parts that form the structure (e.g., casing), mechanical components which aide in functioning (e.g., fan), and electrical components which work with electricity and facilitate the functioning of mechanical components (e.g., motor). In this article, the focus will be on generic components from all categories.
- Casing: – This is the outer part of a cooling tower and made of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP). The casing is created with FRP because it is exposed to weather conditions. FRP is popular for its weather-resistant properties and can withstand high and low temperatures well. Another reason to create casing with FRP is that it is a strong material and protects the internal systems from wear and tear caused by leakages. This is exactly what a casing is supposed to do. Isn’t it?
- Basin: – This acts as a reservoir for water. This is also made of FRP because FRP is anti-corrosive and the basin is in continuous contact with water. Therefore, there is a high requirement for the material to be safe from damage caused by water. Use of this material in FRP cooling towers also prevents growth of microorganisms which can create an unhealthy environment in the cooling tower.
- Fan: – This acts as a medium which blows air within the cooling tower to bring down the temperature. This is an integral part of any cooling tower and depending on the capacity of the tower, the fan installation varies. A large cooling tower would invariably require a large propeller fan. The fan is generally made of cast aluminum alloy so that it can bear the swift movement and generate air efficiently.
- Motor: – This is an electrical part and plays a vital role in functioning of a fan. A motor operates the fan and therefore there is a need for speed control. Most of the time, a manufacturer prefers a two-speed fan for the cooling tower because the conditions in which it will be set up might require so. A motor also needs to be high powered and result in high efficiency for maximum output.
- Inspection Window: - An FRP cooling tower is a huge structure and it is not possible to disassemble it to inspect every time a maintenance or repair is required. Therefore, a structural need is to have an inspection window which acts as a passage to the cooling tower and can be used for cooling tower repairs and maintenance.
Many major and minor parts are assembled to form the components mentioned above. And in reality all of the big and small things are what makes your FRP cooling tower a success.
